Written by: Amare Swierc

Dr. Nicki Washington (AiiCE Director, Duke University Professor) and Dr. Shaundra Daily (AiiCE Backbone Director, Duke University Professor) were the recent recipients of the Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award from the Association of Computing Machinery, (ACM). Dr. Washington and Dr. Daily’s work in altering the computing education system to be more identity-inclusive has significantly altered the accessibility and development of computing education to grades K-16 across the United States. Not only as individual educators but in their development of the 3C Fellows Program and AiiCE, they fully embodied the role of positive social advancement in STEM fields.

ACM is an international organization that works to support and aid the computer science community. The Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award is specifically awarded to educators for advancing new curriculum development and education methods in Computer Science or Engineering. Supported by Pearson Education, there is a prize of $10,000 for continued development and advancement.
